Health Benefits of Banana

Bananas, worlds most popular fruit, available year-round, are one of nature’s best sources of potassium. Bananas is a rich source of iron, high in fiber and a good source for vitamin C(Red bananas contain more vitamin C than yellow bananas .) Containing three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy (No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes). Banana is good for people who have high blood pressure (it is low in salt and also extremely high in potassium (about 4673mg), yet very low in sodium (1mg), thus having a perfect ratio for preventing high blood pressure), anemia (rich source of iron), Stomach ulcer (banana has a natural antacid) and Constipation (high in fiber), Diarrhea (Bananas also contain electrolytes, which are essential for maintaining fluid levels and preventing dehydration).

Why garlic is good for the heart

Researchers have cracked the mystery of why eating garlic can help keep the heart healthy.

The key is allicin, which is broken down into the foul-smelling sulphur compounds which taint breath. These compounds react with red blood cells and produce hydrogen sulphide which relaxes the blood vessels, and keeps blood flowing easily.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham research appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. However, UK experts warned taking garlic supplements could lead to side effects.

Hydrogen sulphide generates a smell of rotten eggs and is used to make stink bombs. But at low concentrations it plays a vital role in helping cells to communicate with each other. And within the blood vessels it stimulates the cells that form the lining to relax, causing the vessels to dilate.

This, in turn, reduces blood pressure, allowing the blood to carry more oxygen to essential organs, and reducing pressure on the heart.

The Alabama team bathed rat blood vessels in a bath containing juice from crushed garlic.

Bangalore boy will be there at White House

When the world looks West for the new wave of change that will sweep across USA, on January 20, young Bangalorean Raoul Menon will also witness a rather memorable event.

This Bangalorean will get to network with the men and women who will make tomorrow’s policies for the world, shake hands with the man who made a campaign statement ‘change, we can’ and change he did.

All of 21, Raoul is enthusiastic, with dreams and ambitions, just like others of his age. He gets to meet the 56th US President , Barack Obama, witness his swearing-in , see history being written in the world’s pages and write it down for his own life’s memories, all as, like he says, “congratulations for doing well” . “I also live in the same wing that Obama lived during the one year he was there — at the Residence hall of Haines,’’ Raoul told TOI. He is on a vacation in Bangalore.

While studying at the Occidental College in Los Angeles , he was chosen by the English and Science departments to participate in the biannual Global Youth Leaders Congress (GYLC) where he, as per practice, had to represent a country other than his own.

He became the lead diplomat for Venezuela, the country he got to represent and of the 130 countries that participated, was adjudged the second place. An invitation to the Presidential swearing-in at the White House on January 20 was the prize.
