Bangalorean wins Commonwealth essay competition

Bangalore girl Tanaaz Kothawalla has won the Commonwealth Essay Competition, Class C, conducted by the Royal Commonwealth Society, London. She is a Class IX student at Sishugriha Montessori and High School.

Participants at the competition had to choose from among three beginnings for their essay. Tanaaz remembered her grandfather’s stories to pen her entry. “I worked on it for a week and had to cut it down from 1,200 to 700 words,” she said.

“What set her essay apart was her command over language, impressive use of dialogues and emotional punch falling short of melodrama,” chief examiner Charles Kemp said. The society received 6,500 entries from 1,400 schools.

Tanaaz has won a cash award of 250 pounds and said she will use it to buy books. “It’s really awesome. Everyone in school knows me now,” she said.
